Vanessa Van Edwards, a Lead Investigator at Science of People, a human behavior research lab, gives us some real tips and tricks on how to really sound and took confident, perfect a handshake, the best opening one-liners, and how to keep people engaged for the remainder of our time with them.

Before this tutorial, I knew that first impressions were extremely important, but I had no idea how easy it was judge someone just based on small things like the tone of their voice, and not even what they’re saying. I realized how much easier it is to really engage with someone and leave a lasting impression when you just work on perfecting those first 20 seconds.

  1. Hilary, I love that you used this assignment to perfect your soft skills! I think that the part about how long it takes to make an impression is especially important. You're completely right; a lot of people don't know how fast impressions are made, so it is good to highlight that the first couple of seconds are crucial.

  2. I also watched a video on Lynda.com! The amount of different things you can learn on that website is insane! Learning how to have the best handshake is definitely really important for job interviews, so this video lesson is really getting you prepared for life after college!

  3. Hey!, your voice thread was good and I especially like how you took a course on something that everyone generally knows but not in that much detail. I knew that first impressions were important but i did not realize how fast we judge people into them or how easy it is to pass a judgement.
